A sample off of a pole dipped in the slag can give you an estimate of its chemistry. Experienced operators use slag color to decide how much slag conditioner to add and make decisions about additions while taking into account the state of slag deoxidation. Then we’ll review the characteristics of available slag conditioning materials that will be consistently better than others under difficult or optimum conditions. Finally, we’ll look at how and why calcium carbide is best used.
