How to Win at Secondary Steelmaking

The secondary steelmaking crew is stuck between a furnace that is giving them a huge variation in steel chemistry, slag chemistry, oxygen content, temperature, and amount of slag carryover, among other things. The caster, on the other hand, requires a specific chemistry, a specific and low oxygen content, a slag that won’t change the steel chemistry, and delivered on time at a specific temperature with as little variation as possible.

We are here to tell you the cheat code.

It’s desulfurization. Even if you don’t need it.

If that sounds a little ridiculous, hear us out. Take a look at the PDF file and let us know what you think.

    • Get to know the seven conditions for effective desulfurization.

    • Understand how the right slag chemistry affects the slag’s physical characteristics.

    • See how the right slag chemistry and physical characteristics affect ladle life.

    • See how the right slag chemistry and physical characteristics affects clean steel (nozzle clogging).

    • Understand what slag conditioners do, and why slag conditioners are better than others.
