IN THIS LESSON

Using Slag Conditioning Effectively

Sometimes you can figure out how things work best, and which things work best, by examining the conditions where they don’t work well. In this lesson we look at the factors that influence the costs of slag conditioning (some not-so-obvious), and the factors that influence their effectiveness. Then we’ll review the characteristics of available slag conditioning materials that will be consistently better than others under difficult or optimum conditions. Finally, we’ll look at how and why calcium carbide is best used.

    • What keeps slag conditioners from working effectively?

    • What things can I do to make sure I’m optimizing their use at the lowest cost?

    • What characteristics of some slag conditioners make them better than others?

    • How much do I add?

    • Where, and when should I add a slag conditioner?
