IN THIS LESSON
What is the Slag Color Telling Me?
Another basic concept in secondary steelmaking is the color of the solidified slag. A sample off of a pole dipped in the slag can tell you not only the depth of slag in the ladle, but it can also give you an estimate of its chemistry. Experienced operators can use the slag color to decide how much slag conditioner to add and make decisions about melt deoxidation and alloy addition while also taking into account the state of slag deoxidation. This lesson will give you the background to get you started on using pole samples.
